THE IMPORTANCE OF A PLAYGROUND INSPECTION

Regular playground safety inspections assist playground owners and operators to manage maintenance schedules, identify potential hazards and provide a playground that is as safe as practicable.

The Australian Standard recommends a regime for regular inspections. A regularly inspected and well maintained playground provides a fun place for children to play. Family members can be reassured that the safety of their children is important to the playground owner and operator.

SUMMERS WON’T GET COOLER, BUT PLAYGROUNDS CAN

With the cool temperatures of spring, people are still in lizard mode — we naturally seek sun-filled spaces. In a couple of months even lizards will be scurrying for cover, as summer temperatures head towards the 40s in some parts of NSW. Current research (1,2,3,4) has published data on the much higher temperatures reached by playground surfaces and equipment when they are exposed to the sun, and the danger of contact burns that such surfaces pose to children.

As the summer of 2020-21 approaches, organisations such as Kidsafe, Western Sydney University and PolySoft, a company producing playground surfaces that have been used to mitigate heat in some of the world’s harshest climates, are demonstrating effective combinations of shade and surface treatments that allow children to make the most of outdoor play.

SANDPITS

Sandpits are great fun for young children. Unfortunately, they can also pose safety hazards, including exposure to germs and bacteria, scratches from foreign materials and splinters. By maintaining the sandpit properly, it can be kept safe and clean.

FROG PONDS

Australia has a great variety of little amphibious friends including the Rocket Frog, the Whistling Tree Frog, the brightly coloured Coorboree Frog and the Green Tree Frog.

A pond creates a home for frogs and adds a lovely water feature in the garden. Attracting frogs to a play space can provide valuable lessons in animal care; creation and maintenance of a healthy frog environment; protection of wildlife and threatened species; and value the needs of local frog species, their aquatic breeding and foraging habitat.

The best way to attract frogs is to build them a home. This includes an area of clean water, plenty of plants to hide in and protection from predators and the hot sun.
