A Message from the Executive Officer

Welcome to the December 2012 edition of Kidsafe News. This edition features articles on inflatable pool safety, kids in cars, and how to keep children safe during the festive season.

Christmas Safety Tips

Christmas is a busy time when it’s all too easy to overlook some potential dangers to children. Christmas decorations are a spectacle for all members of the family to enjoy. Everything from the colourful patterns of tinsel and baubles to the act of putting up the decorations is a reminder of the merry festivities of the season.

Here are a few tips to assist in making child safety a priority.

Kids Can Drown Without a Sound!

Parents are being encouraged to keep their children safe around inflatable and portable pools this summer. Inflatable pools present the same drowning hazards as large pools. Pool owners are responsible for ensuring the safety of children in their homes. By law, inflatable or portable swimming pools capable of being filled with more than 30cm of water require a four-sided fence.

Kids in Cars

On a typical Australian summer day, the temperature inside a parked car can be as much as 30 degrees to 40 degrees hotter than the outside temperature.
Imagine even on a day of approximately 20 degrees, the temperature inside a closed car could be up to 60 degrees!

Bunk beds

Bunk beds can cause serious injuries and deaths if they have entrapment hazards or if they are not sufficiently protected with guard rails and have a safe access opening. Some injuries happen when children use bunk beds for play or when bunk beds are near potential hazards like windows or ceiling fans. Falls are the most common source of injury and can be fatal.

The dangers of high-powered magnets

Parents are being warned about the dangers to children of small, high-powered magnets intended for adults as desk novelties.

The products including 'BuckyBalls', 'Neocubes' and 'Neodymium’ sphere magnets, contain numerous magnets as small as 5mm in diameter. They are marketed as novelty items for adults to create patterns and build shapes.

Restraint Checking Days

Kidsafe NSW and NRMA Insurance have recently conducted free restraint checking days in Bankstown and Gosford.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for supporting these events and NRMA Insurance staff in Bankstown and Gosford offices.

Free restraint checking days will be advertised on our website so keep checking regularly to see if we will be visiting your area.
