Sport
I can do this! - 5-8 years old
As your child grasps the concepts of rules, their play becomes structured and participation in organised sport can become a large part of their play experience. Accidents and injury will be a part of sport. However it is well known that the health benefits of active participation such as improved co-ordination, motor skills, muscle tone and fitness mostly outweigh any injury risks.
Many injury risks can be minimized by ensuring your child uses the necessary protective equipment for that particular sport. It is also important that participants drink plenty of water, and warm up and cool down before and after play such as jogging lightly on the spot or around the oval/block. More intense sport participation should have specific stretching routines that will be lead by the coach.
