Safety in the Backyard
Playing outside in the backyard is a natural pastime for most children. Maintaining a safe outdoor environment is key to keeping children healthy.
Child injuries do occur in the backyard. Nearly half of backyard injuries are due to falls; other causes are cuts, poisons, scalds and burns, choking, bites and drownings or near-drownings.
Injuries to children can be prevented with some care and knowledge of how to stay safe. It also helps if your backyard is a “kidsafe” place to play.
For more information to help you make your backyard as safe as practicable see the documents and links at the bottom of this page.
